Excerpt of a letter to a friend who lives in Oregon

"I had fun last night at Tryon Palace.  I took my camera to get pics of a colorful, local African American Heritage troupe known as Jonkonu.  It was too dark and I got nothing.  I try every year and it is always the same.  But, I did get some good pics of them in a parade over July 4th and I had one of them framed and will hang it in the Bank of the Arts in February. 

 As for last night, it was a beautiful, clear night and seasonally cold here and so it was fun to walk around with an occasional stop at a wood fire to warm my hands and in the end, buy some hot chocolate from a tent vendor for one dollar.  Hot chocolate tastes so much better when the weather is seasonally cold.  Our season here is not like your Winter season at all.  For instance, our rose bushes are still in bloom!!"
